Our Wellness Guru today is someone who has become a very good friend of mine, Sohini De. I first met Sohini when she gave a talk on nutrition at one of the Wellclik Wellness Wednesday events in Dublin a few months back. Sohini had the crowd hooked on her every word as she described the highs and lows of nutrition, and sealed the deal by bringing some tasty treats (healthy of course) for the crowd to enjoy made by her team at Wind of Change Wellbeing Solutions. We hit it off immediately, having both given up the corporate world for the world of Wellness and she was my first choice when an opening came up for a presenter at this weekends Thrive Wellness Festival.

Today we asked Sohini to share some of her wellness tips ahead of the weekends event, and to give us a flavour of what to expect for the future....

Sohini De appears at Thrive this weekend

1. Tell us about yourself, and how you got to be where you are today?

Working in Investments for years covering food knowledge from 'farm to fork' and personal health issues motivated me to adopt a holistic approach to healthy living encompassing optimum nutrition and lifestyle. Studying nutrition based on the functional medicine, helped me join the dots and understand how health is influenced by the choices people are making. So, I decided to take my journey to the next level by helping people in the same situation.

2. Tell us how you spend your average working day

I don’t have an average working day, every day brings new challenges because Wind of Change is new. I have to be ready for any curve balls thrown at me but I always try to incorporate the following as self care: I made a habit of starting the day with lukewarm lemon water, an orange and half a grapefruit or a glass of kefir to ensure abundance of vitamin C and probiotics in my nutrition. I make sure to have lunch and dinner, preferably with my family or use those as catch up time with friends.

My general day will involve lots of reading reports and scientific journals, designing programmes for individuals and groups, answering emails and calls, attending meetings and consultations. I make sure I have a long chat with my dad in India once a day. I utilise my driving time to relax by listening to my favourite music depending on my mood.

I train on my own 1-2 days per week, with my coach twice a week and do two group sessions with my trusted coaches. And I ensure I get 8hours of sleep. I like to prioritise the 4 pillars of wellbeing (eat, move, sleep, relax) at least 5 days a week.

As Wind of Change is a start up, I also have to do lot of writing related to business plans, proposals, cashflow projections, etc.

Whatever I do I make sure to have some time for reflection at the end of the day.

3. What inspires you?

The success stories of common man, woman and child doing extraordinary things!

When someone tells me, I made a positive difference to their lives, inspires me to keep going.

4. What’s your goal in life?

With 20 years of corporate experience, I understood the importance of stress management and significance of optimum nutrition. I realised stresses of modern society is making us ignore what our body is telling us, chronic diseases are becoming the norm.

My goal is to assist people find their way to a healthier lifestyle, because I know, if I didn’t get the help I got during my journey, it would have been impossible for me to achieve the desired results.

5. What does Wellness mean to you?

Nutrition, fitness and a fulfilling lifestyle are the corner stones of health and wellbeing. To be fit to do all the things we love to do, things that makes us happy, while keeping all the modern day commitments, it needs a 360° approach encompassing all the 4 pillars of wellbeing.

6. What advice would you give to a person looking to change their lifestyle to a happier healthier one?

Do not look for quick fix. There is no magic trick. Be patient and believe in yourself. If you want it strongly, it will come to you.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure it makes you happy! Only then any positive change you make in your life will be sustainable.

Little trick: follow the 80-20 rule! 20% investment, 80% return. Apologies, couldn’t resist the investment pun. Make the smallest change to make the biggest impact and keep pushing the boundaries.

Always ask the question ‘what is my Ikigai’? Knowing the real purpose of any action is the best motivation to keep you going.

7.Tell us about your business?

Wind of Change is a one stop shop for your 360° wellbeing! It comprises of like-minded people who have lived the life and gone through the journey themselves, aiming to provide dynamic and customised knowledge based solutions to individuals empowering them in their journey. Getting results are our priority so we combine the 4 pillars in our programmes in a practical yet fun way. Continuous support from experts and compassionate ear ensures goals are achieved.

8. Tell us your Top 3 Tips for Wellness?

I wholeheartedly believe in the 4 pillars of wellbeing: Eat, move, sleep, relax!

Eat and make ‘food from food’. Believe me, it is fun and easy once it becomes your way of life! And it is tastier too, so you are never ‘on a diet’!

To move, choose activities that interests you. So that it is fun and not another chore. Exercise not to punish yourself but for the enjoyment you get.

Sleep and Relax are the most important pillars to repair your mind, body and soul! Someone once said ‘brakes mean, to go fast’! Unusual, but true. Brakes give you the confidence to accelerate, to go fast! We are all aware of how modern day stressors are impacting our whole body systems. So it is important to put the brakes on sometimes and remind ourselves ‘what is my Ikigai’?

9. So what’s next in your career/life?

I have only just begun! The list is endless and I want to do it all as soon as possible, so difficult to say what’s next. But I believe, integrating the Wind of Change idea on an online platform to make it easily scalable and internationalise is a natural progression.

On a personal level, I am a total science nerd so hopefully one day I will be able finish a PhD or equivalent on an exciting topic in nutrition.

Sohini is appearing at Thrive wellness festival this weekend, on Sunday with Roz Purcell at 4pm on the Talk stage.
