Our favourite festival of the annual calendar is just around the corner, the Mind Body Spirit Festival. This jam-packed festival is full of exciting talks, workshops and exhibitors that are all dedicated to the same goal as our website, thats increasing your Wellness. So in the lead up to the festival we'll be bringing you a one-on-one weekly interview with one of the shows main stars.

This week the fantastically talented Joanne Faulkner joined us, author of 'Shiatsu and Conscious Cooking' and all-round Wellness expert. Joanne is a leader in her field and we were very lucky to get her words of wisdom ahead of the Mind Body Spirit Festival in October. Read on for her Wellness tips!

1. Tell us about yourself Joanne , and how you got to be where you are today?

I am a Shiatsu Practitioner specializing in the energy of food in Traditional Chinese Medicine. I use the Hara (chi energy centre of the body) to diagnose internal conditions and systems that are out of balance. The Shiatsu treatment itself is usually given on a padded mat on the floor through loose, comfortable clothing and uses no oils. It works on the same principles as acupuncture but uses thumb pressure and palming massage to penetrate deeply into the muscles and energy channels.

I am the Author of “Shiatsu & the Art of Conscious Cooking” which is an Holistic Cookbook filled with recipes, acupressure points and Traditional Chinese Medicine to suit your mood, stop cravings and alleviate painful physical symptoms. It might not give you the lotto numbers but it will help you in answering questions linked to how you are feeling and the food you eat. Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking uses Traditional Chinese Medicine to personalize the treatment recommending certain foods and flavors that work as medicine to and balance the body and bring it to full health.

In Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine the body is classified into yin/yang organ pairs and meridian pathways, which correspond to emotions, flavours, seasons and colours. There are no good or bad foods, simply foods that do and don’t suit us at this time. It’s all about connecting with the body, seeing what it wants and loving ourselves more.

Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking uses food holistically so that our emotions, physicals symptoms and even cravings direct us to the best possible food for us at this time.

2. Tell us how you spend your average working day?

I am a single mum with 3 children so after getting the kids to school I practice yoga then run 2k every day, which clears the head to begin shiatsu treatments, booked for the morning and early afternoon. One day a week is spent planning new recipes for upcoming cooking classes. My favorite new creation is Raw Chocolate Seed Bites.

3. What inspires you?

My clients inspire me. I am always blown away when I receive a text that the swelling in their knee has gone down, or that they can move their shoulder again, they no longer feel nauseous or that they are pregnant. I also love it when they tell me how well they are after trying a new recipe demonstrated in a class. Even though I have been practicing Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking for many years I am always thrilled and motivated to hear the positive results.

4. What’s your goal in life?

My goal in life is that people use the simple system of Shiatsu & Conscious Cooking to know what their body wants and give it the food it needs.

5. What does Wellness mean to you?

Wellness to me means balance and balance means awareness. Nothing ever remains static, change is constant but I believe just like the Yin & Yang symbol the universe is always seeking balance. So it is the same with us, if we feel cold we eat warm food, if we have a busy week we must follow with rest. If we are well, we are aware of how we feel and how we can meet our own needs to bring us to a state of equilibrium and contentment.

6. Tell us about your business

I have a Shiatsu Clinic in Dublin City Centre and North County Dublin, Ireland. I also run regular Conscious Cookery classes and host health retreats. 7. Tell us about what you'll be doing at the Mind Body Spirit Festival this year in the RDS?

This year at the MBS I will be discussing:

  1. How we feel and the food we choose

  2. Have you ever wanted all the answers ....... what will stop this headache? Why can’t I fall sleep? Why do I crave chocolate? Traditional Chinese Medicine can help you answer many questions linked to how we are feeling and the food we choose.

8. Tell us your Top 3 Tips for Wellness?

Treat food as a lover – nurture your relationship with it and your love for it. Let food love you: Never, never accept second best or poor quality – you deserve excellence.

9. So what’s next in your career/life?

I’m in the process of writing a new Conscious Cookbook which further develops the body’s love connection with good food and good touch.

At the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Dublin you will find some of the world’s leading authors and presenters all experts in their field. This is a 3 day event featuring over 75 different workshops and lectures, including a dedicated Yoga and Wellbeing studio space, with FREE classes and taster sessions hosted by some of the Irish best loved Yoga and wellbeing teachers. The festival will also feature over 150 stalls and a live stage with over 45 performances over the three day festival.
