Being mindful and at peace with yourself is something a lot of people strive to do. As the saying goes: you can have a mind-full or be mindful, the latter is what most people want. The benefits of being mindful include: less stress, less anxiety, improved sleep, improved well being and generally more happy. Below are some ways mindful people do things differently and examples of what you can do incorporate them into your daily life.

10 things Mindful people do differently

1. They don’t listen to negative thoughts or dwell on them. Mindful people are aware they will have a mixture of both good and bad thoughts. They allow the negative thoughts to come and go but only focus on the good thoughts.

2. They laugh at themselves. “If you can’t laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?”. Mindful people know the benefits of having a good laugh and will take any opportunity to do so, even at their own expense. They know what to take seriously and what not to take seriously.

3. They are good listeners. Mindful people know how to listen and focus on who or what they are listening to. They give it their full attention therefore allowing themselves to absorb as much information and detail as possible.

4. They focus. Mindful people will focus on one task at a time. The benefits of doing so mean that they are more decisive, more efficient, more focused and happier…Isn’t this the overall goal??

5. They are curious. Mindful people are curious. Being curious allows them to be more knowledgeable and gives an unknown sense of achievement, therefore making us happier. When we are curious and interested in something or what we are doing, it is easier to get more involved and put more effort into something and to do it well.

6. They go outside. Going outside is something that mindful people will make sure that they do, but not just outside on to the street and go back in, they will take themselves for a 10 minute walk or they will go to a place fully immersed in nature. Nature gives people a sense of ease, as it is living in the moment. It has a past and a future, but nature isn’t rushing to get anywhere. Also mindful people know breathing in the fresh air provided by trees will do wonders for their insides too.

7. They appreciate food. Mindful people know that their health is their wealth and nourish themselves on the inside by eating the right food. They want to be able to focus and excel at certain things and in order to do so they must eat healthy (it can’t be a chocolate & wine party all the time!), but they also know when to treat themselves to. They eat healthy most of the time and when they do want to treat themselves they won’t feel guilty afterwards.

8. They day dream. Mindful people can see the bigger picture, they let their thoughts drift from time to time and use their imagination to see what they want and what their world will be like when they have achieved their latest goal - this latest goal can range from washing bed sheets and getting into bed with the feeling of crisp clean sheets or working hard and visioning the job promotion they want.

9. They can turn everyday tasks into mindful moments. It may not be as tranquil as lying down on a yoga mat surrounded by bustling trees, but mindful people figure that if you can meditate while lying or sitting down, why not meditate while doing everyday tasks, like painting a room or doing the grocery shopping. This can be done by knowing the goal and objective of the task at hand and focusing on that, allow other thoughts to come and go, but focus on what you need to get done and the positive outcome it will have (day dream a little). Examples….Cooking dinner = a happy healthy family, painting a room = fresh new walls and perhaps a new vibe to the room.

10. They know that they are not always right. Mindful people will be open to new ways of thinking and will allow other people to challenge their beliefs. They are open to discussion and getting a different perspective and opinion on a topic, even though they might not necessarily change what they originally thought, they are open to changing their minds if they belief the other person is right and they know they might learn something new from listening.
