Get ready to see some of your favourite GAA stars like you've never seen them before and all in the name of a good cause!
To mark Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, the Movember Foundation has partnered with the GAA to highlight how important it is for men to get to know their nuts a little better.
Many men either never check their testicles, or don’t know how to perform a self-examination, making it all the more critical that awareness around the issue is improved. In a ballsy move, the Movember Foundation and the GAA are encouraging men to become more informed about the risks they face and how they can check for signs. GAA players Jason Hughes, Emlyn Mulligan, Lee Chin and Killian Clarke are ‘copping a feel’ to raise awareness of testicular cancer. From checking in the shower to having a quick fumble at the breakfast table, the series encourages guys and their partners to ‘Know thy Nuts.’ The mission of Testicular Cancer Awareness Month is to educate the country about what’s normal and most importantly, what’s not. Though not always seen as such, testicular cancer is very much a young man’s disease and is most common in men aged 15-34.
What you need to know: ‘Know Thy Nuts’: • Find somewhere comfortable; a warm environment is best, so hop in the shower, soap up and cop a feel
• Roll one nut between the thumb and fingers, checking for lumps, swelling or anything that doesn’t feel quite right
• (Lather, rinse) repeat with the other nut
• If something feels unusual or hurts, seek advice from a doctor
Former senior Monaghan footballer Jason Hughes spoke on taking part in the series: "I’m proud to raise awareness for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month and get guys around the country to #KnowThyNuts. Even now, it can be difficult for young men to talk about subjects like testicular cancer, even though it’s absolutely a conversation we need to be having. It’s so important to check yourself and see a doctor if you notice anything unusual – I’m grateful for the opportunity to spread the word!” Neil Rooney, Movember Country Manager said: “While testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men, it’s largely overlooked and many men simply are not aware of the signs they need to look out for. Partnering with the GAA, we’re going balls out for Testicular Cancer Awareness Month and asking guys and their partners to #KnowThyNuts” Movember is letting it all hang out and encouraging guys to get to know their nuts a little better and if they notice any lumps, pain or swelling, to see a doctor. It’s important to perform a self-examination regularly and not just for Testicular Awareness Month.
