Research carried out by the British Heart Foundation shows that approximately one third of British people cannot remember the last time they took up a hobby. They have revealed the top 10 hobbies that people have lost since their childhood.
The list includes:
Musical Instruments (39%)
Football (26%)
Swimming (23%)
Cycling (20%)
Other sports (17%)
Drawing (16%)
Gymnastics (13%)
Painting (13%)
Arts and crafts (13%)
Dance (13%)
Their research also shows that 90% of adults have given up at least one hobby from their childhood, 39% said it has been over 10 years since they partook in a particular hobby and over 16 years for another 32%. The BHF carried out a poll of over 2,000 people with other results showing that adults used to have a more open attitude to trying new things when they were children and that they have grown up to be a person who generally says no to new things.
What Is The Reason For This?
Generally respondants said that that a lack of motivation is the main reason for giving up the hobby and with their new campaign to raise money for life saving heart research, the BHF is encouraging people to take up a hobby they have lost since their childhood. Getting involved in fundraising is a fantastic way of tackling an illness that devastates millions of lives across the U.K. The BHF is looking for people to fundraise while rekindling that old hobby. It could be a charity cycle, a football match or even an arts and crafts evening.
Marc Shaw, Fundraising Manager at the BHF, said: “Taking up a hobby can be extremely fulfilling, and can be a fantastic way of keeping active and meeting new people. Our survey shows that the majority of us would love to reignite an old passion from their childhood/younger years, as many of us used to be much more open to trying new things when we were younger. By taking up an activity you used to enjoy, you can help raise money for our life saving research and help us make a difference to the millions of people fighting a daily battle with heart disease.”
